Many people who find that their piece did not win a competition, wish to know why. If you are needing feedback on a particular piece that you feel is strong, and would like to see the margin notes, light editing suggestions, and overall observations made by the judging staff on your particular piece, then it would be wise to request that information for your personal use. An outside, trained set of eyes can be an invaluable tool for serious writers. Moreover, if you see that your piece has few corrections, point of view/perspective, character delineation, or other issues, then it would obviously make sense to continue working and honing the piece to get it where it needs to be. Sometimes a single, significant change is all it takes to bring a piece from the mediocre to the spectacular! Other times, the idea may be good in theory, but the objective is not met in the final draft so that a rewrite is in order—most often the reality lies somewhere in between these two scenarios. Either way, acquiring the “inside scoop” from the judges is extremely helpful is seeing one’s creation from an outsider’s perspective.  Investing in your writing is important from this particular perspective because this methodology is based precisely upon the Iowa School of learning and has proved itself an integral part of writing success for many years—so much so, that most of the quality writing programs around the United States have duplicated its process with similar results. For a writer to hear the thoughts of his/her audience is crucial in understanding that which is conveyed and that which is lost to the reader. Happy writing!
