You ought to know, that while we consider all submissions equally, it is extremely important to enter one of the competitions officially because we are obligated to publish winning pieces first. If your piece is excellent and worthy of publication, you may lose your opportunity to be published, not due to lack of talent, rather due to lack of space in the magazine. Whatever space is available (if any) after we have completed the lay out for the winners is filled in with a piece from our “approved literary material box.” The piece we choose from this box (which has all of the excellent unsolicited pieces in it) will be the best piece that meets the space requirement available after the winners are published. There is nothing more disheartening than to have an official entrant receive the large award sum, even though a non-registered piece was actually the better one and ought to have received it. It happens quite frequently, so do consider entering. Even if you are not in need of the grant money, winning a literary award in a prominent literary review magazine stands out to agents, publishing houses, filmmakers and is a valuable asset on resumés. It also makes you eligible for the Pushcart Prize and other awards. No other review offers writers the kind of full-colour, world-wide publication and publicity Carpe Articulum does. We are passionately dedicated to the support and perpetuation of the literary and photographic arts. We look forward to reading your work!

To Our Beloved Readers,

Carpe Articulum Literary Review is a magazine dedicated to the perpetuation of the Literary Arts. Each edition introduces fresh voices and new insights into the world of writing. Articles are always informative and enlightening, allowing the reader to keep his/her “finger on the pulse” of the global writing community, (and its many genres).

This issue’s theme is Longing. As usual, we chose a theme that offers writers a broad, inspirational venue to uncork the genie of genius within them.

The written word is the most brave and egalitarian form of communication, since the reader has no way of forming prejudices against the writer because there is only the black and white word. Thou ghts can be heard and accepted or rejected based solely upon their own merits. No one knows if the writer is black, white, male, female, Jewish or Buddhist except that the writer tells them so (or not). The written word may be the only true Utopian environment the human race ever has the privilege of engaging. It is the only true defense against being forgotten. In this day and age, when the oppressed are finally gaining a voice and a willing ear, we see this mission of being a conduit for them as sacrosanct. So, our desire is to continue to raise a flagship in such uncharted waters, and to create a stage for the heretofore silent. Moreover, the written word is all that remains of us. As Faulkner once said, “Nobody remembers Shakespeare’s children”. Even our children’s memories will last but a few generations, but our written words make us accessible and memorable forever.

Aside from providing a stage for fresh writers and writings via a forward-thinking literary review, Carpe Articulum also bestows awards, scholarships and grants regularly upon new artists whom display promise and potential. Chief among these awards is the prestigious Carpe Verbum Literary Award, which presents about $10,000.00 per annum to writers and artists from every walk of life. In this manner, we show our undying support to the blossoming writers, painters, photographers and other interpreters of life. We will continue our work as an eclectic medium for writers, agents, publishing houses, filmmakers and photographers to converge. Keep writing! Keep reading!

Sincerely,
H.R.L. Broscova

He told me a dream he had
the night before

Sentenced to execution,
he held me

and asked me the
fatal question:

Are you pleased

He said I nodded
Don’t worry–
it doesn’t hurt.

You are doing it

Jodi Picoult
Author of My Sister’s Keeper

Speaks To Carpe Articulum Literary Review About This Issue’s Theme of Longing:

Longing is the foundation of the human condition — don’t we all want what we can’t have? Whether it’s the greed that is the cornerstone of a villain or the unrequited love of a star-crossed couple, the hole that a reader sees gnawing away at a character echoes personally.

The great irony, of course, is that we expect that missing piece to be the thing that brings happiness — and it rarely is. For many of my characters, this learning curve comprises the character arc — and the final revelation that they were wrong all along is part of the book’s twist at the end. Like Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ, we usually have the tools we need for happiness right in our hands, but are too blind to see it.

You are a popular, wealthy writer, but that brings you little comfort today.

You are in NewHampshire for the funeral of your wife’s father. It is not the ending you’d have written. And there is something else: At precisely the appointed time, your cell phone rings. You have been dreading the call.

You answer. “Nicholas Sparks.”

The caller, a magazine interviewer, greets you and expresses his sympathy for the loss of your father-in-law.

“Thank you,” you say, wishing you could be doing almost anything but talking to this guy. Comforting your wife of 20 years, mostly; hugging your five kids.

The interviewer reminds you that you’d met 13 years ago during the makeshift tour for your first novel, “The Notebook.” You don’t remember him, and don’t try to. You’ve met fans and interviewers beyond counting. Does this guy have any idea how many readers you have? The interviewer thanks you, too many times, for agreeing to speak with him under the somber circumstances.

Yeah yeah yeah. “It’s okay,” you say, holding the cell phone to your ear like a shell, wishing for the sound of invisible oceans rather than intrusive questions.

You want to be with Cathy. Even though her father had been sick for some time and in increasing distress, his death has been hard, stirring dark riptides in your heart. But you trust your publicist, Edna Farley, whom you acknowledge in your latest novel. She has told you this seems like a polite, sincere fellow, this interviewer.

The interviewer starts with your new novel, “The Last Song.” That title has added poignance for you now, in New Hampshire for the funeral. Why this novel, the interviewer asks; what was it about the story or characters that demanded your time and talent? There is an edge in your voice, just this side of condescension, that perhaps you don’t mean to be there.
