Question: Who are some of the emerging artists featured in the current issue of Carpe Articulum?

Answer: We are pleased to present the work of emergent photographers Carlos Lemus (Grand Prize), Toni McConnel (second place), and Steve Fleet (third place). Honourable mention also goes to photographer Glen Losack, MD. We are also proud to present the original work of several other emergent artists in many genres, throughout the magazine.

We are extending the deadline on this occasion for the short fiction and Poetry Award Series by an additional 30 days. We are allowing this rare extension due to a change in the submissions processing program. The program will better inform you of the status of your work and help judges to better communicate their thoughts on your work.

Due to this transition, we are providing a little more time for everyone to get used to it. The tech department is doing a marvelous job, but most of the staff here are genuine bibliophiles (as well as luddites). For many of us this program change represents a struggle and a learning curve. However, it WILL make things easier for YOU, which is our goal. So, we are taking the plunge and implementing it immediately.

ALL the participants are processed and documented as of Sept. 29th, so please do not worry if you’ve already submitted work. This is strictly an attempt to make certain no one ever falls through the cracks. No one has yet fallen through, thus far, but with the enormous growth we have experienced over the last several years, we need a more comprehensive system in place to insure that our record remains impeccable.

You ought to know, that while we consider all submissions equally, it is extremely important to enter one of the competitions officially because we are obligated to publish winning pieces first. If your piece is excellent and worthy of publication, you may lose your opportunity to be published, not due to lack of talent, rather due to lack of space in the magazine. Whatever space is available (if any) after we have completed the lay out for the winners is filled in with a piece from our “approved literary material box.” The piece we choose from this box (which has all of the excellent unsolicited pieces in it) will be the best piece that meets the space requirement available after the winners are published. There is nothing more disheartening than to have an official entrant receive the large award sum, even though a non-registered piece was actually the better one and ought to have received it. It happens quite frequently, so do consider entering. Even if you are not in need of the grant money, winning a literary award in a prominent literary review magazine stands out to agents, publishing houses, filmmakers and is a valuable asset on resumés. It also makes you eligible for the Pushcart Prize and other awards. No other review offers writers the kind of full-colour, world-wide publication and publicity Carpe Articulum does.
